Having a working aircon system in your car during the summer months is an absolute must. But how exactly does this system work? And what are the key components that keep your vehicle cool and comfortable?
So how does air conditioning work in cars?
By absorbing heat from the inside of the vehicle through refrigerant, and then releasing this outside, a car air conditioning system can keep the temperature of your vehicle cool. But how exactly does the refrigerant work? And what are the important components involved in this? Well, there are several, including:
- The compressor- The compressor is one of the most important parts of a car air conditioning system. While some electric or hybrid vehicles use a compressor that is powered by electricity, for other cars, this is powered by the engine. Its role is to pressurise the refrigerant, turning it into a hot, high-pressure gas and then sending it through the air conditioning system.
- The condenser- Once the compressor has pressurised the refrigerant, this then flows into the condenser, which is usually located at the front of the car near the radiator. As air passes through the condenser, the refrigerant releases its heat and begins to cool. This causes the refrigerant to change from a gas into a high-pressure liquid.
- The expansion valve- After leaving the condenser, the refrigerant passes through the expansion valve. This reduces the pressure of the refrigerant, allowing it to become much colder. The cold refrigerant is then sent to the evaporator.
- The evaporator- The evaporator is located inside the car, usually behind the dashboard. As the cold refrigerant passes through the evaporator, it absorbs heat from the air inside the vehicle. This cools the air, which is then blown into the cabin through the air vents. As the refrigerant absorbs heat, it changes back into a gas.
- The refrigerant cycle- Once the refrigerant has absorbed heat inside the car, it returns to the compressor and the process begins again. This cycle continues while the air conditioning system is running, helping to maintain a comfortable temperature inside the vehicle.
What are the benefits of car air conditioning?
While the most well known benefit of car air conditioning is the ability to make your car feel comfortable and cool during high temperatures, there are other benefits too. These include:
- Reduced humidity- Car air conditioning also removes moisture from the air, which is essential for reducing humidity inside your vehicle. Not only can this make driving in summer a more pleasant experience, but it can also prevent the build up of moisture inside your car during winter, preventing mould and other issues.
- Demisting the windscreen- In the winter, a misted windscreen can be particularly frustrating, but the air conditioning can also be used very effectively for this. Because the air conditioning removes moisture from the air, it helps to clear condensation from the glass more quickly.
- Improved air quality- The air conditioning system works alongside the car’s cabin filter, which can help to remove dust, pollen and other particles from the air entering the vehicle. A clean and well-maintained cabin filter can help to improve the air quality inside the car.
Regular maintenance is important for keeping a car air conditioning system working properly. Over time, refrigerant levels can fall and components such as the compressor, condenser or cabin filter can develop faults.
